Hello friends,

-SwiftSwitch-

Swift switch is a program that is safe to use. This program gives you the possibility to play runescape on it. You have fast ways of changing or choosing worlds there also links to other runescape sites, and calculators can be found there. You also will find the IRC chat there which we use as well for our clan chat.

The link to this program which is 100% free to download is: http://www.swiftswitch.net/ .

-mIRC-

Introduction

mIRC was created by 'Khaled Mardam-Bey',
mIRC was created in an atempt to create an easy to use IRC envirement for windows users.

So, what does mIRC stand for?
The awnser to that is simple, '-m- Internet Relay Chat',
The 'm' in mIRC doesnt really have a meaning, altho according to khaleds own discription.
mIRC is a client side tool that allows you to connect to IRC networks everywhere on the globe.
mIRC Supports many active-scripting abilitys and commands, ranging from 'looks and feel' to 'respond to commands'.

mIRC also has the largest online comunity dedicated to IRC (Next to quakenet).
With this in mind, its simple to see why mIRC is so widly used.

Installation and configuration

Step 1 -> Downloading mIRC Smile

mIRC can be downloaded here: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
MD5 (Version 6.17): afd7b6331b404f8336ebeb8fa0f9b096 *If you dont know what MD5 is, ignore this.

(Note, though this tutorial was writen for mIRC 6.17! most features also exist in prior (And future) versions)

Step 2 -> Installing mIRC

Ok, on to the installing part.
Launch mirc61*.exe

The first screen that you will see after launching the installation will be the introduction screen.
This simple intoduction screen will warn you to close all aplications prior to install.

- Screen introduction

The next screen you MUST read and accept this policy.
(Note, by accepting you will also aknowledge that you atained mIRC legally (AKA through the mIRC website))

- Legal Policy

Screen three will handle the installation options, carefully select WHERE you want to install
(I recommend you keep the location 'C:\Program Files\mIRC\')

- Install Options

Screen 4 will handle the actual installation (No actions required)

Screen 5 will ask you what to do next, simply select 'launch mIRC' and hit 'Finnish'

- Screen Launch

mIRC has been sucessfully installed, and we are ready for the next part of the tutorial.
Configuring mIRC

After launching mIRC for the first time the ABOUT screen will pop-up,
This pop-up will inform you of the ammount of time you have left to 'use' this program.
Now, even if this drops below 0, you can still use the program, (JUST WAIT A FEW SECONDS).

After accepting the 'about' screen, you will find yourself in the 'mIRC options screen'

- mIRC options

In this screen you will find 4 text boxes, and 2 checkboxes.
You only need to fill in the 4 text boxes.
Fullname: ( !!! - USE A BOGUS REAL NAME - !!! )
Email: This one is bullshit, IRC doesnt use an email for idents.. fill in any email you want.
NickName: mIRC will 'atempt' to connect you as this user.
Alternative: If your nickname is taken, mIRC will fall back on this nickname.

Example:

- mIRC options - filled
After we have set our nickname(s), and idents (Email/RealName).
We can set mIRC's global options.

[mOPTIONS->IRC]

Read the options here carefully, and enable as you want.
We recommend you enable the following options.

(v) Prefix own messages
(v) Show mode prefix
(v) Iconify query window
(0) Use single message window
(v) Use query for notify nicks
(v) Copy messages to query
(0) Whois on query
(0) Auto-join channel on invite
(v) rejoin channel when kicked
(v) rejoin channels on connect
(V) KEEP CHANNELS OPEN!
(v) Hide channel key

The rest is your choice Very Happy

[mOPTIONS->IRC->Options]

Enable Hide ping? pong! event

(This will drive you nuts if you forget it!)

[mOPTIONS->IRC->Messages]

Enable-> TimeStamp events.

(You can use a custom time stamp, to do this simply overwrite the current one)
(You can use /help time, to view a full list of available 'timestamp formats')
(The online default is [HH:nn:ss], this will display -> [16:32:16] -> [Hours:Minutes:Seconds])

[mOPTIONS->IRC->Logging]

Set [Automaticly log:] Both
(v) Timestamp logs: [HH:nn:ss]
(v) Strip codes
(v) include network
(v) make folder

[mOPTIONS->IRC->FLOOD]

(v) enable flood protection

As for the rest, mess around with it Smile
Adding and connecting to a server.

To add a server in mIRC is relatively easy.
To add a server you need to go to [mOPTIONS->connect->servers]
From there, hit Add.
The dialog that will 'pop-up' is pretty much explains itself.
To add mp-gaming, add the following info

Description: Whatever you want
IRC Server: manticore.uk.eu.SwiftIRC.net
Port(s): 6666-7000
Group : none
Password:

The new server should be selected automaticly, so all you need to do is hit [Connect To Server]

If you wish to connect in the future, just make sure that the correct server is selected and hit Connect To Server

(ADVANCE LEVEL 1)
Alternate methode to connect to a server is simply typing in /server
EG: /server manticore.uk.eu.SwiftIRC.net

To 'prevent' mIRC from disconnecting your current one, you can use the -m switch to force a new server.
EG: /server -m manticore.uk.eu.SwiftIRC.net

Alternatly, you can also give out the port number and optional password (Should you ever require it, but thats not part of this tutorial )

Getting Started ONLINE!

After making all the neceserry adjustments to the mIRC client, and connecting to the server you will be welcomed by a series
of SERVER messages, called numerics.
mIRC Turns these numerics into easy to understand lines.
Below is an example of the messages you will be greated with (Note these can (and most likely be) different from server to server)
Once you got to this point your connected to the server and ready to use IRC.
To join our channels all you have to do is type
/join #SwiftSwitch
/join #RSmarket
/join #SwiftKit (new)

** Though you can now use irc freely, it is advised to read on.
** The tips and explanations below will help you understand (m)IRC
** As well as help you speed up the use of mIRC

Basic commands

Commands in mIRC are prefixed with a /
This means that any sentance starting with a / will be seen as a command.
(Note, you can bypass this by using ctrl+enter Smile )

A quick overview of the basic commands.

/join :Join the channel you sepcify Smile *(Most channels start with a #, so dont forget that)*
/part :Leaves the channel you specify
/whois : Will echo detailed information about a person into your STATUS* window or the current server.
/whowas : Returns stored information about a person that 'left' the server.
/me : ACTION type message, rather then "Grey: says hello Smile" you will get "Grey says hello Smile".
/quit : QUITS the connection and sends the text as a 'goodbye' message.
/kick : If you are granted OPERATOR status (%,@,&,~ infront of your name) you can kick users from the channel
/ban : Bans a specific nickname from the channel.

Basic channels FAQ

A channel is nothing more then a virtual 'chatbox'.
All chat send in the channel can be read by anyone in the box.
Inside the channel there are different type of 'users'.
Generally, these users are [user], +[user], %[user], @[user]
However, on some servers there could be more/less types. the most common of 'more' types are
&[user], ~[user].

So what do these users mean? In order (Note, may not apply to ALL servers)

~[user] :Mode +q (Channel owner // cfounder) -> Can do anything on the channel: Kick, Ban, Mute, Set Modes, Chanserv options (Where enabled)
&[User] :Mode +a (Channel coowner // SOP) -> Can do most of the things the owner can: Kick, Ban, Mute, Set modes, MOST chanserv commands.
@[User] :Mode +o (Channel operator // AOP) -> On most servers, this is the highest you can get (Next to +q). This can do the same as the above, Chanserv commands are limited.
%[User] :Mode +h (Channel HALFoperator // HOP) -> Can set most modes (No h(%) o(@) a(&) q(~)), Can kick/ban lower (Can ban +h(%), but not kick), Only has the lowest chanserv rights.
+[User] :Mode +v (Channel Voice // VOP) -> The most common, has no MODE rights, No kick rights, No ban Rights, But does have VOICE rights. (This is needed if the channel is moderated (+m))
[User] : Basic user. has no rights, can usually talk but thats about it. can be muted, can be nick provoked.

Now, this above might (And most probally will) have confused you.
However, you should see it like this.
~King, ″ minister, @Politician, %cop, +18+ (no pu intended), Civilian.
Still confused?
~Fleet Admiral, &Admiral, @Captain, %Lieutenant, +Ensign, Civilian
STILL CONFUSED?
~King Pin, &Drugs Lord, @Gang Master, %Steet gang, +Noisy (dead) politician

I think that about covers the 'ranks'/'modes' in a channel Smile

Ok, next up are the channel modes themselves.
(Note only the basic modes are handeled)

+m (Moderated, regular users cannot talk, need at least voice)
+k (Key is set, need a key to join the channel, /join #channel )
+n (No external messages, if your not in the channel you cant talk in the channel)
+t (Only (half)OPERATORS (%) AND ABOVE can set the topic)
+l (Maximum amount of users in the channel.

(These, and other modes can be easilly changed by DOUBLE CLICKING on a BLANK spot on the channel)

So, what does this mean then? +ntml100
(Figure it out Wink )

Ok, now all of this is a big bite to take all at once.
However practise makes perfect! you do NOT need to know all the commands.
Just remember these facts.

1) If a user is above you in the nicklist and has a different sign (other then +) he can kick/ban you.
2) If a user is above you in the nicklist and has the same sign (Other then %) he can only ban you.
3) If a user is above you in the nicklist and has +, or no sign at all he cant do a thing.

***! BANNING ON IRC DOESNT MEAN YOU INSTANTLY LEAVE THE CHANNEL, IT MEANS YOU CANNOT '(RE)JOIN' THE CHANNEL
***! IF YOUR BANNED (BUT NOT KICKED) YOU CAN ALWAYS UNDO THE BAN.
***! ON IRC, BANNING DOES NOT MEAN THE SAME AS KICKED.

Also, general kicks are usually a warning. so dont take those to highly either Wink

Basic CHAT faq

In irc there are 4 (public) ways to chat.

1) Channel messaging, (Just join a channel and chat Smile )
2) ACTION CHANNEL messaging, (/me in a channel Smile )
3) QUERY (privmsg) messaging, double click a persons name to private message them, (or use /msg [text])
4) NOTICE (!!~ANOYING~!!) messaging, /notice [text] (will display the message, but will also BEEP on mIRC. so try to avoid it Wink
will also be used by many for statscripts or more)

Text formatting

Colours
Color coding your text is simple, just use these colour codes (Note, CTRL+k will also give these codes)
%C00%C01%C02%C03%C04%C05%C06%C07%C08%C09%C10%C11%C12%C13%C14%C15
(%XX represents CTRL+k)

Bolding your text is also equally as simple, use CTRL+B (%^b)
To underline your text use CTRL+U (%^u)
To undo ALL use CTRL+O (%^o)

A second color code overwrites a previous one, EG %04Hello %02world!
A second bold code cancels a previous one, EG %^bHello %^bworld!
A second underline code cancels a previous one, EG %^uHello %^uworld!

CTRL+o undoes all three, (%^o represents undo) EG %04%^b%^uHello %^oworld!

Advanced text formatting
Background colours
Background colours work the same way as regular colours work.
use CTRL+K to create a colour code, then choose a font colour.
Next hit the 'comma', then add another colour code number.
EG: %04,02
Would create a blue background with red text Smile

Text spacing
MOST font's do not like to many spaces, mIRC's default is no exeption.
For that reason if you want to create more then one space, you will have to add 'nonblockable' whitespaces.
Confused? No need to be. by default %^o is a 'nonblockable' whitespace.
So, to create 3 (or more) spaces.
One could use: %^o %^o %^o %^o

Speeding up mIRC

Channel joining
Now, i can immagine that typing /join #bla, /join #bla2 etc. gets annoying.
So, what if we make mIRC do this FOR us?
mIRC has 3 ways of doing this, however we will restrict to the most obvious and least confusing one.
The Channel list tool.
You can access this by either hitting the folder like icon (#+) on the tools bar (4th icon)
or hitting ALT+J

When you first open this, it will be full of channel names.. however these are useless, delete them ALL.
(Just select them all and hit the delete button Smile )

Next, just add the channels you wish to join automaticly.
Hit ADD, then fill in the channels information.

** EXAMPLE **
Channel: #ufor
Password:
Description: ufor clan chat
Network: swift
(v) Join on connect
(0) Minimize on join
Folder:
**EXAMPLE**

(Note, to add to a network hit Add, then select the network.)
(This way you can set different setting for the same channel on different networks Smile )
(Though if your using just 1 network you can simple leave it at 'All networks')

Automaticly execute commands on a server 'connection' AKA: ON CONNECT

[mOPTIONS->Connect->Options]

Hit 'Perform'
(v) Enable perform on connect.
Network: Swift

Everything you put in the large text box, will be executed upon connecting to the server specified.
You can input any commands.
From:
/echo --OMFG I just connected--
to
/msg nickserv identify
NICKSERV

***!Nickserv is not always available on every server!***

Nickserv is ment to allow you to maintain your nickname.
This means that if someone 'asumes' your nickname you can 'retrieve' it.
This also allows you to be registered, thus giving you rights to chanserv.

To register with nickserv you need to type (After you connected /duh Smile )

/ns REGISTER

EG /ns register hdf9897djkhdjk some@email.com

REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD WELL

If in the future nickserv request you to 'identify' as the nickname owner.

You will have to 'identify' to nickserv.
To do this, type:

/ns IDENTIFY

EG /ns IDENTIFY hdf9897djkhdjk

If your password is correct, nickserv will confirm it with.
Otherwise you will be disconnected after to many failed atempts.
(If nickserv replys nickname does not exist, the nickname has not been registered yet!)

After you have identifyd you can join the channels, and enjoy IRC Smile

** Use the above mentioned PERFORM mIRC speed up to add /ns identify to your perform Very Happy **

This concludes our mIRC Tutorial/Beginners guide.

I wrote this Guide a long time ago, but I think it'll still work for the users who don't know any of the above yet ^^

Kind Regards,
_Tom
